Instructor Authorization

As stated in the Preparedness Manual of Administrative Policies and Procedures:

1. To teach a given course, the instructor must hold the appropriate authorization. (This means that the instructor is authorized by the chapter in whose jurisdiction the course is to be taught and that the authorization includes the course that is to be taught.)

2. An instructor must follow the local policies of the chapter in whose jurisdiction he or she is teaching.

So what does this mean to you? When you take an instructor course, you are given a slip of paper that is your instructor certification. You must then call for an appointment to become authorized to teach. Beginning in 2004, instructors who have never been authorized in Burlington County have to take a short orientation to Red Cross policies and procedures. Your initial authorization will expire at the same time as your instructor certificate.

In order for an authorization to be renewed, you need to teach one course of record during an authorization period. If you have turned in a course record sheet, your authorization will be renewed for 2 years in most cases.  If you teach somewhere outside of Burlington County, you need to send us copies of the course record sheets for those courses in order to get credit for teaching them.

Normally, new Instructor Authorizations are mailed out at the end of the year. This year, there is a slight problem with printing that will delay the delivery of some certificates, particularly CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Bloodborne Pathogens. These will be sent out as soon as the problem is fixed.

If you have any questions about Instructor Authorizations or would like to schedule an appointment, please call the Burlington County Red Cross office at (609)267-9595.
